Since its inception in 2014 Micromax founder Rahul Sharma led Yu Televentures has seen some pretty successful product launches. Its first products like Yureka, Yuphoria and Yunique were grabbed by users in huge quantities within seconds of their respective flash sales. Last year it also managed to take jibes at OnePlus, Samsung and even Apple with its first flagship product Yutopia. Now the time had come for it to launch another flagship for this year, so it has done that. However, this year’s flagship product is much cheaper than that of last year. And they’re calling it Yunicorn.

Yu Yunicorn is a great smartphone that comes with a lot of noteworthy things, the first of which is its metal unibody design. According to company, the metal case of device has been made by mixing aluminum with magnesium, both of which are robust quality materials. The result of using such material is a device whose body won’t wear out overtime. Plus, it also gives a premium feel to the device. YU has shown some great design sense in many of its previous products, so it’s not surprising to see such a magnificent offering from them.

Coming to specs, it’s loaded with a 1.8GHz Octa-Core Mediatek Helio P10 processor, 4GB RAM, 5.5-inch Full-HD display, 13MP primary camera and 5MP secondary camera. The device is powered by a 4,000 mAh battery and it has got 32GB of expanable memory with expandable up to 128GB. And yes, it has got all those modern buzzwords too – a fingerprint scanner, 4G etc, etc.

Despite those awesome specs Yunicorn is not that much about the hardware – it’s the software that sets it apart. It’s running a highly customized version of Android 5.1 Lollipop, which YU has affectionately named “Android on Steroids.” The minimalist UI of this Android version is quite impressive as it complements the hardware design. Despite being minimalist it’s not boring, something that often happens with minimal UIs. It’s just right.

Another major software change lies in its app drawer. Unlike other phones that come with horizontally scrolled app drawers, Yunicorn has got a vertically scrolled and alphabetically organized app drawer. The amount of bloatware has also been decreased significantly, which provides a stock-Android like experience.

Yunicorn comes pre-loaded with Around YU 2.0, which is company’s software for finding different types of services around you. For example, it has got a database of doctors to help you find the best ones wherever you are. It has also got information about a whole range of other services including cabs, hotels, restaurants, airports, railway stations and so on. You can order any service through it, and then pay for it with your YU Wallet. It’s a seamless experience.

The device has also got a Monochrome mode, which not only gives a stylish black and white look to the UI of your device but also saves battery! And there’s a cloud backup functionality as well.

Overall, YU Yunicorn is a premium flagship device at an aggressive price point. It seems like last year’s premium pricing didn’t work out well for the company. Hopefully this one will do better as it’s a powerful device in the mid-range segment. If you want to buy it, you can register yourself for the flash sale that’ll take place on June 7. It’ll be available for Rs. 12,999, but only for the first month! Yes – YU is also continuing innovation with its pricing strategy. After first month it’ll be sold for Rs. 14,999.
